Güngören is located on the Çatalca Peninsula in the European side of Istanbul. It is the third smallest district of Istanbul in terms of area after Adalar and Eminönü. Güngören consists of 11 neighbourhoods. Güngören is adjacent to Zeytinburnu, Esenler Bakırköy and Bahçelievler districts. The population of Güngören, which has a surface area of ​​7.2 km2, is 258,441 as of 2019.The district of Güngören, which is expected to be re-established in the urban transformation project, was named after a village in the Mahmutbey subdistrict of Bakırköy.

The district has received intense immigration since 1950. At the same time, the population of the district increased significantly, as the citizens of Romania and Bulgaria settled in Güngören. In parallel with this increase, construction has also increased. Transportation to the surrounding districts is carried out by metro and tram İstanbul electric tramway and tunnel establishments, private buses, minibuses and various commercial taxis.
